Universities and research institutions have been important partners of ODA. They have contributed to and participated in ODA as think-tanks, education institutions, and implementing agencies with their expertise. In practice, Korean universities and colleges have established lectures on international development cooperation and field activities in developing countries for students to enhance their knowledge of international cooperation. KOICA has supported about 50 universities and colleges to run programs related to international development cooperation to enhance the participants’ understanding of ODA and encourage their engagement. Meanwhile, many public and private research institutions conduct research actively; for example, about 12 research institutions including university have participated in review and organization of Korea’s development experience helpful to our partner countries which provide essential programs to develop “Implementation Strategy of Korea ODA” in 2012. Given growing demand for consultation capacity in research and implementation of ODA as well as regional studies of partner countries, the role of academies will be continuously expanded.
